The cards are then cut, or shuffled. Next, the house dealer deals the cards to the players. They are then re-distributed around the poker table clockwise, with each player receiving a hand. During the re-distribution, each player can take another card from the top of the deck, or can discard up to three cards.
Once all the cards are re-distributed, the betting goes on. All but one player will fold, and the remaining player will collect the pot. During this final betting round, any players who still have a hand will be able to bet, and raise.
In some games, the poker hand only counts as the best five-card combination. For example, in draw poker, a straight is only counted as the best hand, while a flush is not. Likewise, in a seven-card stud, a straight is only counted, but a flush is not.
Most modern versions of the game are played using a forced bet. Also known as the ante, this is a bet made by all but the player whose hand is the best. Sometimes this is a blind bet.
